Yoga doesn’t please

Yoga means Union, and refers to regaining the connection between everything we think is separate.  This illusion of separateness of things, resides in our mind and our mind only. We see black and white, good and bad, light and dark, worry and happiness. We see body and mind, we see you and me, we see our body and the earth, the individual and god. Nothing seems to be connected anymore and we seem to keep searching for external things that create a sense of connection; ever changing partners, the use of drugs, buying material substances.

It’s just that… sooner of later these things won’t suffice anymore. Sooner or later we will bump into our true self knocking the door and screaming for a truthful connection.

Wherever we are, we all feel the need to be connected. The entire practice of yoga is an on-going journey of discovering all these illusions, all these patterns in the mind that make us feel lonely, separated and incomplete. The method of yoga is dedicated to uncovering the layers of our being that have seperated us from the universe, the elements of the world, the people around and maybe most importantly; our true selves.

The answer to the question: ‘what is yoga?’, is a very simple and clear one: Yoga citta vrtti nirodha – Yoga stills the fluctuations of the mind.

*

Now how on earth do we start? You can’t literally touch thoughts or patterns in the mind. You can’t literally touch Happiness or Bliss. But you can touch the body. One of the reasons why the physical practice of yoga appeals so much to so many people is because it gives us something very tangible to work with: this body we reside in. Its the first layes we can touch. This body that influences the mind and visa versa, because they are both part of this one human existence. The physical practice of yoga, yoga-asana, is about using posture as a mirror to understand and transform ourselves. It’s an on-going journey to find the freedom that is already within us, through the use of discipline.

*

Where ever we are on this path, what layer of ourselves we are uncovering, is different for each and every single one of us. So is the reason why we started practicing in the first place. So is the type of practice that we connect to the most. We might have started to get out of our head, to regain control over our breathing, to let go of worries and tension, to stretch our hamstrings. We might practice Ashtanga Vinyasa, Kundalini, Hatha Flow, Prana Flow or any of those other names that seem to be invented these days (but that’s another subject ;) ).

*

As many reasons there are to start practicing, as many benefits the practice of asana has to offer. Yoga become physically fit – definetly (Abyasa yogi’s know what I speak of ;))! Yoga to be entertained – yes, it’s a great way to spend your time. Yoga to feel good – yes, the feeling of floating out of a yoga class. Yoga to belong to a community – yes, one of the most important aspects in spiritual work. And many, many more. And there are all of great importance. There is just one thing we really need to keep in mind: in the end all of these are subordinate to Yoga Citta Vrtti Nirodha – finding stillness in the ongoing fluctuations of the mind. All of these beautiful benefits are a consequence of our own choice to do the spiritual work that gets us connected again.

See, the things is;

Yoga doesn’t please. Its not meant to please.

 The choice to start that path, to do that work; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, isn’t always comfortable. Its not meant to take away the things you ‘don’t like’, about yourself, about your life, about your mind – things that are reflected in the asana’s you feel the most resistance to. Its meant to uncover things. Parts of your body that you didn’t know existed. Things you can make yourself do even though you never thought you would ever! Patterns that block happiness. Beautiful parts of yourself that have never had the chance to shine through.

*

The beauty of this method is that it gives you exactly what you need. It will give you whatever experience is the most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. It doesn’t ‘please’. And exactly because of that it might the one of the most ‘pleasing’ choices you can ever make :).
